Do you know how annoying it is to bring home the rug you just bought and realize it’s a magic carpet for your coffee table? How could this happen? It looked so big hanging up in the store! Same goes for the sofa you can barely walk around because it’s so giant. You may even have one of those purchases still in your home, pretending it looks “fine” because it was too much of a pain to return. I get it; you saw something that was a great deal and didn’t want to lose it, or you didn’t feel like going home and measuring.
Case in point ^^^ look at that baby rug. A little measuring could have saved this.
Who needs access to doorways anyway?
This is such a common mistake, and I’ve even done it myself (hello non-returnable back living room rug…). It’s way easier to just bop along town and get the best deal and pray it works, but it does not yield the best results! The items in your home are not like impulse buying a top at Gap! They stay for a long time and you can’t try them on at the store! Listen to my plea! Now that you have had sense talked into you, here’s what to do:
First, measure out what your ideal item would size. For rugs, unless you are doing a custom size, you will need to measure out a few standard sizes in the room and see which one fits best. I’ve been looking for a rug for our front living room, and doing custom was out of my budget, so I had the option of a 9×12 or 10×14. Once I measured it out, I was pretty sure a 9×12 would be best, since the 10×14 would bleed into our entry walkway. Just to be sure, I took some leftover painters tape and taped it out.
Even though a measuring tape gave me reference to where the rug would stop and start, actually taping it out left no room for doubt. Measurements don’t lie! I can now see that the front legs of all my furniture will rest on the rug with room to spare. I was able to step back and sense what the actual rug would feel like in the room.
You can do the same for sofas, beds, pretty much anything! It will save you quite a bit of trouble.
